The Eye at The Joule

In the heart of downtown Dallas, the larger-than-life optic sculpture, Eye, is one of the city’s most iconic photo ops.

Created by American artist Tony Tasset, the 30-foot-tall fiberglass, resin, and steel sculpture is a replica of Tasset’s own eye. Referencing everything from a pharaoh’s eye, a Masonic eye, and the eye of “Big Brother,” the piece ultimately means “whatever you want,” says Tasset. “Eye is one of those images that has taken on a number of meanings over the years. God and consciousness are just two of them.”

Originally commissioned as part of the Chicago Loop Alliance’s Art Loop program, Eye made its debut in the Windy City’s Pritzker Park in 2010 before arriving to its new Dallas home three years later. Since then, it has become the city’s most unique private event space —the site of the annual Dallas Art Fair’s closing soirée, along with countless weddings, parties, yoga classes, and selfies.

While Eye is the largest contribution to public art by Dallas-based developers Headington Companies, it certainly isn't its first. Though its origins are in the oil and gas industry, Headington Cos. is most defined by its ambitious vision for the renaissance of downtown Dallas, a charge which it has led since the 2004 purchase and subsequent restoration of The Joule.

The companies mission of placemaking downtown is anchored by the values it holds for public arts and programming, as proudly evidenced by the museum-caliber art on view throughout The Joule, hosted pop-ups with international galleries, and philanthropic initiatives that bring enduring value to the neighborhood.
